lecture on Monday

Postby Mohamad Farhat 1L » Mon Apr 30, 2018 2:22 pm

from the lecture, the professor was discussing each electron configuration of each element. I was confused on way scandium starts from 3d^1. I know that its in the d block however why does it start with a d 3.

Mainly the way the periodic table is configured is that they go up in levels of filling orbitals and increasing energy in levels. 3d orbitals are higher in energy than 4s orbitals, but lower in energy than 4p orbitals. This is why that the highest energy that Scandium's valence electrons lie in are the 3d orbital.
