Energy difference between 4s and 3d

Why does 3p have more energy if 4s has a higher principal quantum number?

What you wrote says 3p but you asked about 3d in the header so I assume you just miss-typed. We know that the 4s electrons are lost first during ionization which means that they are of a higher energy level than the 3d orbital since the highest electrons are found farthest away from the nucleus, thus are lost first during ionization. Through this observation we put the 3d orbital before the 4s orbital when writing electron orbitals.

So is that specific only to the 3d and 4s orbitals or does the d subshell have lower energy than the s subshell that precedes it in general (i.e. will 4d have a higher energy level than 5s, etc.)?

The 4s shell is only lower in energy if there than 3d when there aren't electrons in 3d, which is why atoms lose the 4s electrons before they lose the 3d electrons. Those in the 3d shell would be the highest energy electrons due to the repulsive forces of electrons already in the 3d shell.
