d- orbitals

Postby TiffanyL1G » Fri Oct 19, 2018 11:27 am

For the p-orbital there are the px, py, and pz atomic orbitals, but what are the five different orbitals for the d-orbital? What about the f-orbital? Do we only need to know the p atomic orbitals or do we need to know all of them to some extent?

From what I recall from lecture today, we will only be asked questions with the px, py, and pz orbitals. We will not have to know dxy, dyz, dzx or any of the f orbitals

The five names for the d-orbital are dxy, dyz, dzx, dz^2, and dx2-y2.
