Is there a convention for ordering d orbitals or can it be done in any order?

Hi Shirley!

If you're referring to the configuration, then there is a convention. It goes 1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^2, 3p^6. After this, it gets a little confusing. The 4s- orbitals actually come before the 3d- orbitals because 4s- orbitals have a slightly lower energy. We prefer lower energies first because we want to maximize attraction to the nucleus when doing configurations. The higher the energy levels imply that the electrons are less tightly bound to the nucleus. I'm not sure if this answers your question. hope this helps!
