### Atomic Orbitals

What do the different orbitals (s, p, d, f) mean and its relationship with the periodic table? For example, n=3.

The s, p,d,and f orbitals correspond to the main types of shapes of the atomic orbitals. For example, the s orbitals are in the shape of a sphere and the p orbitals are two lobes with a nodal plane through the center. The periodic table is also split up in to s, p, d, and f blocks in which the valence electrons (with the highest energy) have the corresponding orbital type. The principle quantum number n correlates to the row in which the atom is located on the periodic table. For example, if n=3, the atom would be in the 3rd row of the periodic table.

The orbitals are also relevant with energy levels. For example, s-electrons have a lower energy state than p-electrons in the same shell.
Within the shell, the order is s<p<d<f.

The possible orbitals are determined by the quantum number (n) with the formula l=n-1 (for the upper limit) and 0 at the lower limit.

Where, l=0 is an s-orbital
l=1 is a p-orbital
l=2 is a d-orbital
l=3 is a f-orbital
