What are degenerate orbitals?

Postby Edward Xie 2E » Sun Oct 28, 2018 6:10 pm

What are degenerate orbitals, and could I have a few examples? This was on test #2, and I was confused as I don't remember it being mentioned in lecture (to the best of my knowledge).

Degenerate orbitals are orbitals of the same energy level

Any s-orbital would have 1 degenerate orbital
Any p-orbital would have 3 degenerate orbitals
Any d-orbital would have 5 degenerate orbitals
Any f-orbital would have 7 degenerate orbitals

This was not discussed in lecture to the best of my memory either. Because degenerate orbitals are when there are two orbitals of the same energy, all you have to do is square the (n) level.
