6th Edition Problem 3.9

The question asks : Which M2+ ions (where M is a metal) are predicted to have the following ground-state electron configurations: (a) [Ar]3d7; (b) [Ar]3d6; (c) [Kr]4d4; (d) [Kr]4d3?

I'm not sure how to go about this question, especially with the d-state exceptions. Can someone show how they solved any of the of these?

since the electron configuration shows only the 3d and 4d shell so it is implied that the 4s shell was taken first because it has the higher energy. for the first one the two electrons are coming from the 4s shells and the final configuration is [Ar] 3d7 4s2 which is Cobalt so the ion is Co 2+.
