When determining the 4 quantum numbers that represent a wave function, is there a way to distinguish whether the 4th quantum number will be negative versus positive? Will you have to give two options for the quantum number sequence for each wave function indicating plus or minus 1/2 or is there a way to tell if one is more correct than the other?
Basically, elements on the left half of the periodic table will have +1/2, and elements on the right half will have -1/2. This is because on the left half of the table, the orbitals each have one electron in them, and once you get to the other half, the electrons begin to double up. Each element has a specific 4th quantum number, so it does matter whether it is + or -
One is not more correct than the other. I think it is enough to understand that no electrons of the same atom has the same quantum numbers, and that an upper arrow symbol indicates that it is positive 1/2. They are just different in that they are spinning clockwise versus counterclockwise.
