Can someone describe what a wave function is and what is it is used for?

A wave function is a mathematical description of the probability of a particle's quantum state as a function of r (the distance from the nucleus), theta (angle from the positive z axis), and phi (the angle about the z axis).

Hence, the square of a wave function tells us the probability density of an electron at each point.

In addition, the density of a cloud centered on the nucleus at each point represents the probability of finding an electron there. The densest regions of the cloud represent locations where the electron is most likely to be found.
