Can someone describe the Stern and Gerlich experiment and why it is useful?

In this experiment, atoms were sent through a magnet field and deflected from a straight path depending on its electron spin. The collection plate on the other side of this magnetic field revealed discrete points of accumulation, rather than an expected continuous distribution. Through this experiment, the spin magnetic quantum number of electrons (either +1/2 or -1/2) was discovered.
