For HW problem 1.D.23: "How many orbitals can have the following quantum numbers in an atom:(a)n=2,l=1;(b)n=4,l=2,m1=-2; (c)n=2;(d)n=3,l=2,m1 =+1?"

Would it be better to state the max number of orbitals, or all the different possibilities?

For example, for part c, you can assume l = -1,0,1, which would mean that you could have 3 orbitals if l=1 or -1. However, if l=0, you could only have 1 orbital, so would the final answer be "1 or 3 orbital(s)," or just 3 orbitals?

Wouldn't the value of l in n=2 be either 0 or 1?

l=0 would correspond with the 2s subshell, which has 1 orbital.
l=1 would correspond with the 2p subshell, which has 3 orbitals.
So there would be four total orbitals in the n=2 energy level.

Hi Nikki,

I also wrote the total number of orbitals. I reported them the same as Manav, which is also how they're written in the Student Answers Manual! But it's a good idea to write out the possibilities, then total them up. I hope this helps!
