Energy levels

Postby Marni Kahn 1A » Wed Oct 16, 2019 4:05 pm

Does the d orbital of an n=4 shell have a higher energy level than the p orbital of an n=5 even though it is filled before the p orbital?

I believe the 4d orbital has a higher energy level than the 5s orbital, but not the 5p orbital. The graph I linked below might be helpful. https://webs.anokaramsey.edu/chemistry/ ... iagram.PDF

The 4d orbital does have a higher energy level than the 5s orbital. Higher principal quantum numbers aren't necessarily always associated with higher energy levels, such as this case of 4d vs. 5s.

Agreed! As move further out to higher shells there is more energy.
