Can someone explain what the balmer, lyman, paschen, and brackett series are?

The principal quantum number for the lower energy level involved is the same for each absorption line in a series. For example, Paschen series are the series of lines in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom which corresponds to transitions between the state with principal quantum number n = 3 and successive higher states.

The series is from the spectrum of hydrogen, as sequences of lines correspond to atomic transitions that each begin or end with the same atomic state in hydrogen.

The Balmer series- all of the lines are in the visible region

The Lyman series- ultraviolet region

The Brackett series, Pfund series, Paschen series- infrared region
