how many orbitals in n=2
I was reviewing past textbook problems and a question was: How many orbitals can have the following quantum numbers in an atom for n=2? and I said 5 but the solution is apparently 4. Why would it be 4?

n=2 only has s and p orbitals, since the first quantum number possible for a d orbital is 3. There is 1 s orbital and there are 3 p orbitals, so n=2 has 4 orbitals.

If n=2, then l can equal 0 or 1. If l equals 0 that is the s orbital, and if l equals 1 that is the p orbital. Since, as stated before me, there is one s orbital and three p orbitals, the possible answer is 4 orbitals.

Yes, as stated before it has four because it is the s and p orbitals. Remember that the p orbital is p(y) p(x) and p(z) this added to the s orbital equals four.

As those stated above it will have 4 orbitals because when n=2, the l=0,1 (Up to n-1) then ml ranges from -l,+l so it would just be 0 for l=0 and then m=-1,0,1 and added them up equals 4 orbitals.

There are 4 orbitals because there is the s orbital, but then there's the p(x), p(y), and p(z) orbitals.

When n=2, the value l can have is only 0 and 1. l=0 stands for s-subshell, which only has 1 orbital. l=1 stands for p-subshell, which has 3 orbitals in the direction of each axis. Thus, there are 4 subshells in total.
By the way, d-subshell can have 5 orbitals.

Hi! n=2 has four orbitals because energy level 2 includes the single s orbital as well as the three p orbitals (px, py, and pz). The point of confusion might be that two electrons can fit in each orbital, so you may have thought there were two s orbitals, when there's really one s orbital with two electrons in it.

Hi! n = 2 has four orbitals because the quantum number, 2, is possible only for s and p orbitals. Since there is 1 s orbital and 3 p orbitals, this results in a total of four orbitals for n = 2. Hope this helps!

when given the values for n l ml and ms I understand how to get the coefficient and the quantum number, but how do you figure out whether its x y or z? for example i understand that when n=2, l=1 and ml=-1, the electron is 2p... but how do you figure out that it's 2px?
