practice problem 1D 19

Postby emmaferry2D » Mon Dec 07, 2020 10:41 am

How many orbitals are present in the (a) 4p-subshell; (b) 3d-subshell; (c) 1s-subshell; (d) 4f-subshell of an atom?
would this answer to this be a) 3 b) 5 c)1 d)7
if not could someone explain to me how to find these values

Yes those are the answers!

s has 1 orbital
p has 3 orbitals
d has 5 orbitals
f has 7 orbits

as each orbital can hold 2 electrons

Yes, those are correct! The number of orbitals in a subshell is equal to the number of possible ml values for the specific value of l. For 4p, l = 1 so ml = -1, 0, 1; therefore 4p has 3 orbitals.
