Memorizing Shapes of Orbitals?

Postby Maxwell Yao » Sat Oct 16, 2021 10:25 am

I know that we don't have to draw the orbitals, but do we need to memorize the shapes of orbitals for the midterm?

I don't think there will be drawing questions on the midterms... It will certainly help if you can memorize the shapes, especially for the s and p orbitals since it clarifies the atomic structure. However, if it is too difficult then yeah you can leave this out.

I believe that understanding the shape may help, but it is more important to understand ψ n, l, ml, ± 1/2 when trying to focus on orbitals for the midterm.

Hi Maxwell! I do not believe that you need to memorize the shapes of the orbitals, but you should have an idea of what they could look like and why.

Hi, I think the images of the orbitals were shown during class was for us to visually see what he was talking about. However, I do not think we need to memorize the exact shapes of the orbitals for the midterm.

I highly doubt that there will be any questions concerning the shape of orbitals on the midterm. I think it'd just be good to know the quantum numbers.

Hi, so i'm pretty sure Lavelle said we don't have to memorize the shapes for the midterm.

There will be no drawing orbitals on the midterm, but I would conceptually focus on the s and p orbitals.
