Basically when the schrodinger's equation for an orbital changes sign, it creates a plane where there is no chance of the e- being found there. The higher the principal quantum number (n), the greater the number of nodes there are.

Nodal planes are an area around an atom's nucleus where the probability of finding an electron is 0, which also means that the electron distribution is asymmetric. s orbitals don't have them, but p, d, and f orbitals do.

A nodal plane is an area in the orbital where there is zero electron density. The p,d,f orbitals have nodal planes but the s orbital does not. Therefore, for example, the s orbital is spherical while the p orbital has a lobe on the each side of the nucleus with a nodal plane in between.

A nodal plane is a space within an orbital where there is zero electron density (meaning you won't find any electrons there). They can be found in the p, d, and f orbitals (which means that they are asymmetric), but the s orbital does not have one (which means that it is symmetric). Hope this helps!

Does the nodal plane of a p orbital pass through the nucleus to create its elliptical shape? Or am I misunderstanding?

I believe the p orbital does have a nodal plane passing through the nucleus. That way, electron density is forced away. And for the p orbital specifically, the nodal planes just happen to be the x y and z planes.

nodal planes are places where the probability density is zero. this means there is 0 chance of finding an electron within the nodal plane.

Nodal planes are planes that pass through the nucleus and have an electron density of zero. They add on to the description of where electrons tend to be located.
