px, py, pz

Postby Vicky Tong 3E » Fri Oct 22, 2021 6:24 pm

Can someone explain what px , py , and pz means and why its important to know? I know it has something to do with the x, y, z axis of p-orbitals.

Hi!
px, py, and pz are just there for to help us understand the shape and orientation of the orbitals!

The significance of px, py, and pz is that they are the way the p subshell's different orbitals are labeled. It is like saying the position of the electrons is on the x-axis, y-axis or z-axis. When talking about the quantum number ml, when l = 1 which is the p-orbital, ml = -1, 0, 1 which refers to px, py and pz.

The significance of px,py, and pz is that they help determine what axis that the orbital lies on.

px, py, and pz are important because they tell you about the orientation of the orbital. They tell you whether the particular electron is on the x-axis, y-axis, or z-axis.

The px, py, and pz tell you about the orientation of the electron's orbital.
