Number of Electrons in Elements

Postby Bailey Herbert 2L » Sun Oct 24, 2021 8:16 pm

Just wondering, how can we tell the number of electrons in an atom of a certain element?

The number on the periodic table that corresponds to the element indicates the number of electrons within one atom of that element.

The number of electrons in an atom (unless it's an ion!) is the same as the atomic number.

The number of electrons in an element is equal to the number of protons, which is represented by the atomic number.

For elements we look at the periodic table. The atomic number of the element indicates the number of electrons in neutral atoms. However, for ions (cations/anions) we calculate them based on the superscript number as well as the atomic number. If a cation has +3 as a superscript, then we would take the atomic number of the atom and subtract 3. This is because a positive charge indicates a loss of electrons. The same is for anions. If an anion has a -2 superscript, then we would take the atomic number and add 2. Anions have a negative superscript because they gain electrons.

In an atom, the number of electrons is equivalent to the number of protons. The number of protons is what the atomic number is (H is 1, He is 2, C is 6). In an ion, however, the number of electrons is the number of protons (or atomic number) + or - the number of electrons added or lost. For example, an He+ ion loses 1 electron so 2 - 1 = 1 electron present. an He- ion gains 1 electron so 2 + 1 = 3 electrons present.

The number of electrons in an elements is equivalent to the number of photons, so it is basically the atomic number on the periodic table. Hope this helps!

We can tell the number of electrons in an atom of a certain element by looking at the element's atomic number, which represents the number of protons and electrons there are in an element.

the atomic number listed under each element will indicate the amount of electrons

The number on top of each element in periodic table is the number of electrons in elements.

The number of valence electrons in an element corresponds to the element's main number on the periodic table. For example, Carbon is the 6th element, so it would have 6 valence electrons.

You can determine the number of electrons in an element by looking at the atomic number. The atomic number represents the number of protons in the element but since there are the same number of electrons as protons, you can use that number.

The number of electrons in an element is given by its atomic number on the periodic table
