Degenerate Orbitals
Hi, I do not know what the term degenerate orbital means-can anyone clarify what exactly this is?

Equal in energy to what?

Re: Degenerate Orbitals
For example, in a hydrogen atom, the 2s and 2p orbitals are degenerate meaning that they have the same energy value. Moving from one to another doesn't lower the energy of the atom.

Re: Degenerate Orbitals
I'm not actually sure that 2p and 2s are degenerate, since a p-orbital has more energy than an s-orbital. however, 2px, 2py, and 2pz orbitals are degenerate, since they are in the same subshell.
