quantum number f

Can period 5 elements have the subshell f? Since it can equal to 0,1,2,3,4

I think that period 4 elements can have the subshell f. This is the way I think of it, but I am not sure if I am correct. For the subshell f, the angular momentum quantum number would be three. Therefore, the angular quantum numbers would be 0,1,2,3. If you count these up including 0, it would be four numbers, equal to the energy level where f resides. Sorry if this was confusing!

Hi!
I think subshell f is only used by elements in Period 6 and on. If you look at the periodic table, the f block is elements 57-71 and 89-103 (which is shown in periods 6 and 7). For example, if you were writing the period 6 element lead (Pb), the configuration would be [Xe]4f14 5d10 6s2 6p2. Although period 5 elements have the principal quantum number 5, the f orbitals are empty at that energy level (similar to how period 3 elements have empty d orbitals at that energy level). The f orbital is not occupied until the principal quantum number 6. Hope this made sense!!

Yes, the f subshell is part of the 4th shell level but like the person above said, it isn't used until you get to an element in the 6th period.

The subshell f starts on the 4th level (4f) but is only seen in 6th period elements. The fact that they have different quantum numbers may be a little confusing!

I don't think you have to worry about it too much, because the I think we only need to know the general quantum numbers up to the d subshells.

Yea, we are mostly focusing on s, p, and d.
