### Quantized Energy

Can someone clarify what it means conceptually when energy is quantized?

Energy is "quantized" because light comes in packets of energy defined by its frequency and planck's constant. Quantization has to do with it only being able to have discrete values.

### Re: Quantized Energy

In terms of electromagnetic radiation and energy levels, quantized means that you can't jump from energy level 1 to energy level 1.5. You can only jump from 1 to 2, 1 to 3, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, etc. The energy levels are set in stone and you have to apply enough energy for an electron to jump an entire level or the electron won't move at all. This is only applicable in the quantum world and shows an obvious difference between giving energy to an electron and a larger object like a baseball.

what exactly is the relationship between quantized energy and the n energy levels? I am a little confused

### Re: Quantized Energy

Quantized energy can only have certain values and the n energy levels are the energy gaps which both can relate to show, "every atom has certain energy levels, which are strongly related with the mass of the atom. ... When they jump from a higher energy state to a lower one, the energy difference between the states will create a photon with that energy."(socratic.org)

In an atom, for example hydrogen, the electrons can only exist in specific energy states, which we associate with the "n energy levels", and they are quantized because they are set, there is no in between. The orbitals of an electron have quantized energy levels, so the energy absorbed or released by an electron when moving up or down energy levels can only be those specific (quantum ) quantities.
