Quantum number shortcuts

Postby Juanalv326 » Thu Oct 19, 2017 12:40 am

Are there any shortcuts that may be useful for remembering the quantum numbers? Something that may come in handy?

The simplest shortcut is to remember these rules:

Given a value for principle quantum number n,

the angular momentum or azimuthal quantum number l can take on integer values of 0 --> n-1

the magnetic quantum number ml can take on integer values of -l --> +l (remember to include zero as a possibility)

Finally, every orbital can hold two electrons with spin quantum number ms = +1/2 or -1/2.
