### Values of Quantum Numbers

(a)How many values of the quantum number l are possible when n=7? (b)How many values of ml are allowed for an electron in a 6d-subshell? (c)How many values of ml are allowed for an electron in a 3p-subshell? (d)How many sub shells are there in the shell with n=4?

This is #19 from Chapter 2, right?
Refer to Table 2.2 on page 36 of the textbook
a) 7 values
there are n different values of l for a given value of n; for example, when n=3, l can have any of the three values 0, 1, and 2
because l has the value of n-1, so it can be 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6

b) 5 values
ml has the values of l, l-1,...,-l
in a d-subshell, l=2, so you can have -2, -1, 0, 1, or 2

c) 3 values
in a p-subshell, l=1, so it can be -1, 0, 1

d) 4 subshells
because it can be 4s, 4p, 4d, or 4f

a. l=0,...n-1
So for this question you should list the integers ranging from 0 to n-7.

b. d is associated with l=2; and -l is less than or equal to m, and l is greater than or equal to m. Therefore, ml= -2,-1,0,1,2.

c. p is associated with l= 1; and -l is less than or equal to m, and l is greater than or equal to m. Therefore, ml= -1,0,1.

d. For this question, you have to count the orbitals in each of the shells with n=4. 4s has 1 orbital, 4p has 3 orbitals, 4d has 5 orbitals, and 4f has 7 orbitals. 1+3+5+7= 16 subshells.

When do you know if you should be using the n-1 equation for l of that s= n=0; p= l=1; etc.? I am really confused because I understand the material but then always get the values wrong when it comes to l because I don't know when to use the equation or the set l values that correspond to n levels.
