Which quantum numbers represent what? For example, does l represent orientation or velocity?

n is the principal quantum number:
- specifies shell
- indicates size

l is the orbital angular momentum quantum number:
- specifies subshell
- indicates shape

ml is the magnetic quantum number:
- specifies orbitals of the subshell
- indicates orientation

ms is the magnetic spin quantum number:
- specifies spin state
- indicates spin direction

n
-principal quantum number
-determines the energy and size
-also called shell
n=1,2,3,4,...

l
-orbital angular momentum
-describes the shape
l=0,1,2,3.... (n-1)

ml
-labels different orbitals of a subshell
-orientation
-magnetism
ml= -l -> +l

above 3 quantum numbers specify an orbital

ms
-the spin
ms= +/- (1/2)

think of the quantum numbers as a progression of specificity with regards to identifying a particular electron of an atom.

n -> l -> ml -> ms

energy level of electron -> subshell within the energy level (n) where the electron is located -> the specific orbital within the subshell (l) in which the electron is located -> the spin of the electron within that orbital (this can be +1/2 or -1/2, depending on whether the representative arrow on the configuration is pointed upwards or downwards)

hope that helped!
