higher energy/ lower energy

Today in lecture the professor said s has lower energy than p, p has lower energy than d, d has lower energy than f (in the same shell). how does this relate to electrons? does higher energy mean more electrons or does it relate to frequency? I don't know what to relate the highe/lower enegry back to.

S, p, d and f are orbitals for the electrons. Electrons in s orbital has lower energy as it is the smallest orbital and this the energy of the electrons increases when it is in larger orbitals. Size of orbital: s<p<d<f.

I think it also has to do with electron shielding like how electrons in the s orbital experience the least shielding within an energy level and electrons in the f orbital experience the most electron shielding within the same energy level. Due to this, the s electrons are more attracted and closer to the nucleus than the electrons in the p, d, or f orbitals.
