### What do l and m represent?

I'm just a little confused as to what the letters l and m represent? I know that n is the energy level, but what are l and m? Thank you.

l is the angular momentum quantum number and it determines the shape of the orbital. m is the magnetic quantum number and it determines the orientation of the orbital.

l represents the type of orbital and m represents which of the l orbitals you're in

L describes the type of orbital the electron is located on or shape. So l=0 is an s-orbital, l=1 is a p-orbital,and so on. M with a subsript l describes the orientation orbital the electron os located in. M with subsript s describes the the direction of the spin state.

l is the subshell and describes shape, also known as the angular quantum number. m is the orientation which labels different orbitals of a subshell, also known as the magnetic quantity number
