Does an electron's energy increase when it moves from subshell to subshell?

If an electron absorbs energy from a photon, it could get excited and move up to a higher energy shell. If an electron drops down to a lower energy shell it loses energy. So if an electron is moving up to a higher subshell then it is absorbing/gaining energy.

I think another way to think about this is from the equation E(n)= -hR/n^2 As n increases the electron has more energy which means that if an electron were to drop down to a lower level it would emit energy. This would mean an input of energy is required to elevate an electrons level.

When an electron shifts position from one subshell to another they have undergone a change in energy. Movement to a higher energy subshell means that the electron has absorbed (gained) energy, and movement to a lower subshell would reflect the electrons' emission (loss) of energy.
