when asking to describe the orientation of lobes, does that mean to just describe their shape?

Yes, it pretty much means to find the amount of orbitals in a shape, which depends on the way the shape is oriented on a node (plane).

Hello!

Specifically, the quantum number that corresponds to the orientation in space is ml. X,Y, and Z are used to describe the orientation on the plane.

You would describe the magnetic quantum number (m) which labels different orbitals of a subshell including nodal planes ie symmetric density distribution or not
