In the atomic spectra model, the hydrogen atoms are ideally in a vacuum and then there comes a white light going through it. This makes the hydrogen excited and this is where I get foggy. Does the hydrogen become an isotope giving off an electron into the air and then coming back together after the light disappears? The book model does not make much sense of it either...Please and thank you for your responses.

When the hydrogen gets excited, the electron doesn't completely leave the hydrogen. The electron just absorbs the energy and gains energy levels, meaning it is in an excited state but still influenced by the pull from the hydrogen atom's nucleus. When the electron goes back to the ground state(where it usually is, n=0), it emits the light that we have observed during the experiments.
