Atomic Spectra Module Question 44

Postby Lauren Huang 1H » Tue Oct 16, 2018 11:12 pm

Can someone help me explain how to do this question?

44. In the hydrogen atomic spectrum, what is the wavelength of light associated with the n = 4 to n = 1 electron transition? What part of the electromagnetic spectrum is this wavelength?

Also will we be required to know the electromagnetic spectrum by memory?

First, calculate the energy at level 4 using the E = - hR/(n^2).
Then, do the same when you calculate the energy at level 2.
Once you find the energy at both levels, find the difference in energy, which is Efinal - Einitial.
Then use the frequency = energy/h (Planck's constant) to find frequency.
Once you find frequency, use the equation wavelength = c (speed of light)/frequency to find the wavelength.

You can also use Rydberg's equation, but this is how he solved it in his lecture and the example in the module!

Also, I think we should be familiar with the electromagnetic spectrum.

Hope this helps!
