Re: Quantum Number L
Quantum number l (angular momentum) distinguishes orbitals of the given n by different shapes. Additionally, it also tells you which suborbital an electron is located in.
Here are a few l-values and their corresponding letters:
0=s, 1=p, 2=d, 3=f, 4=g
S orbitals have a spherical shape. P orbitals have a polar shape, and D orbitals have a cloverleaf shape.

Re: Quantum Number L [ENDORSED]
l, orbital angular momentum, shows the shape. l = n-1.
l values also correspond to an orbital shell.
l=0 is s
l=1 is p
l=2 is d
l=3 is f

Re: Quantum Number L
The quantum number L represents the orbital angular momentum which is the shape of the orbital. l is typically n-1 where n is a whole number integer from 1-7.
L values correspond with the shape of the orbital (s,p,d,f). When l=0 it is s. When l=1, it is p. When l=2, it is d. When l=3, it is f.
