Psi squared meaning

Postby longjump » Thu Oct 18, 2018 9:58 am

Can someone explain the meaning of psi^2? It was unclear what it meant in class to me.

I wouldn't be too concerned about anything relating to the Schrodinger Wave equation. From what I understand however, psi^2 correlates to the probability density of finding an electron within an orbital.

ψ^2 is a wave function that describes the probability of finding an electron in a certain area, our TA said for the next quiz there wouldn't be too much about it, but you should know the definition.

Psi squared is the probability of finding and electron in an orbital.

psi squared is actually not the probability of finding an electron in a given orbital, it's just proportional to the probability. It's actually probability density (so probability density * volume = probability of finding an electron
