Atomic radius

Postby Marsenne Cabral 1A » Sat Oct 20, 2018 2:55 pm

Can someone help clear up if the atomic radius gets bigger when electrons move from the s orbital to either the p,d,or f orbitals? I think the radius stays the same but just want clarification?

As you move from the bottom left to the upper right corner, the atomic radii decreases/becomes smaller. As you go up the group, the shelling effect decreases. Each shell decreases the attraction of the nucleus to the electrons. Going right across the period increases the proton number, thus increasing the attraction with the electron. I do not think the orbitals necessarily determine atomic radii, only shape and orientation.
