4th quantum number

Postby Esther Lee 4H » Sun Oct 21, 2018 1:17 pm

I'm confused as to what information the 4th quantum number gives. I know the combination of the first three specify the orbital and that the fourth gives you the spin state but what does that mean?

Spin is the total angular momentum of an object, described in discrete values based on Planck's constant. Basically, spin is the inert angular momentum of the electron in quantized levels.

The fourth one gives the orientation of the spin of the electrons, there can be two values +1/2, and -1/2. the positive value indicates a clockwise spin, and the negative indicates an counter clockwise. So what this means in general is that electrons are spinning themselves as they orbit around the nucleus.
