How can you tell the difference between ground state and excited state?

The excited state is higher in energy.

an excited electron will be in a higher energy level than it "should"/would normally be in

Excited electrons are higher in energy levels, so like the energy picture Dr. Lavelle drew, an excited electron could be in the n=4 or n=7 energy level rather than n=1.

Excited states of electrons have higher energy levels and the higher level energy electrons naturally want to move to the ground level of electrons.
