How do you know is the spin is + 1/2 or -1/2 or both?

You can see when you write out the electron configuration in Aufbau configuration. The up arrows are + and the down arrows are -.

Based on what we've seen in class, I'm assuming the first electron in an orbital spins upwards (+1/2) and the second electron spins downwards (-1/2). Is this right?

I think so. I don't think it matters too much as long as you don't assign the same four quantum numbers to any two elements.

Since this number is determined off of the electron configuration, how do you know when to draw an arrow faced down or faced up so you can determine if it is +1/2 or -1/2?
