Principal quantum number refers to the energy level an electron resides in as well as its relative distance from the nucleus. The magnetic quantum number indicates the orientation or position of the orbital.

The principle quantum number determines the energy level and is also called the shell and is labeled as n. The magnetic quantum number labels different orbitals of a subshell and is labeled as mℓ.
