In reference to question 1.E.1, "Which of the following increase when an electron in a lithium atom undergoes a transition from the 1s-orbital to a 2p-orbital? (a) Energy of the electron. (b) Value of n. (c) Value of l. (d) Radius of the atom. Which answers would be different for a hydrogen atom and in what way would they be different?"

Would there ever be a time when the answers are different for a hydrogen atom?

All of the answers will be the same for a hydrogen atom. Even though the atoms' outermost electrons have different values of n (lithium's being n=2, while hydrogen's is n=1), the energy of the electron would increase in both a hydrogen and lithium atom. The value of n for the electron will also increase, as it is starting in a 1s-orbital and transitioning to a 2p-orbital (thus, from n=1 to n=2). The value of l will also increase, as the size and shape of the atom increases with electron transitions to higher states of energy. The radius of the atom will increase for both, since a transition to a shell with a higher energy state will increase the radius, even if the atom's highest energy shell shares the same value of n with the new energy state.
