### Correlation Between n and l

In the book, it gives an example where if n = 3, l can have any three values (0,1, and 2), but what do these three numbers indicate?

Since n=3, the electron is in the third energy level, which means the electron can be in the s orbital (l=0), p orbital (l=1), or d orbital (l=2).

The different values of l indicate which orbitals the electron can be on with l=0 meaning s-orbital l=1 meaning p-orbital l=2 meaning d-orbital l=3 meaning f orbital and so on.

l indicates the azimuthal quantum number of an element that denotes the subshells the element contains;
l=0 signifies the s orbital (with a possible value of 0)
l=2 signifies the p orbital (with possible values of -1,0,1)
l=3 signifies the d orbital ( with possible values of -2, -1, 0, 1, 2)

l gives the shape of the orbital and it's also called the sub-shell.
l=0: S orbital
l=1: P orbital
l=2: D orbital
l=3: F orbital

l is the angular momentum quantum number or "shape."

l is the second number that gives you the Angular Momentum which determines the shape of the nodes of orbitals.
