Positive Sign on the Magnetic Quantum Number

Postby Ariel Fern 2B » Sat Oct 19, 2019 10:34 pm

Hi everyone! I was just wondering if the + sign on the magnetic quantum number (ml) is mandatory or if it is just good practice. The answers in the book have the + sign, so I was just wondering if it was necessary or if writing 2 was fine as opposed to +2. Thanks! I'll probably include the + sign to be safe, but I'm curious about this.

I always put the plus sign to be safe in order to differentiate from the negative values of the magnetic quantum number.

I don't think the positive + sign is necessary for the magnetic quantum number because if there's no positive sign it will be assumed that the number is positive. It definitely doesn't hurt to put a + sign though.
