Spin States

Do we have to know how to find the spin states of an electron? And if so, how exactly do we do that?

If you visualize it with drawing arrows to represent electrons in orbitals, you draw one up arrow (+1/2 spin) to represent the first electron in each orbital in that shell before going back and filling in down arrows (-1/2 spin). So for example in a p orbital, electrons 1, 2, and 3 would have +1/2 spins, and electrons 4, 5, 6 would have -1/2.

Hopefully that makes sense? If anyone can explain it better, please help out.

you can first draw lines to represent number of orbitals in each sub shell, then depending on how many valence electrons there are you can decide how many arrows you need to draw in. in terms of where to draw the arrows, fill each line with 1 arrow first and then if there are more arrows that need to be drawn, go back and add a downward arrow to the orbitals that can fit one.

Could someone clarify to me exactly what the spin state of an electron means? Like is it simply just the direction in which the electron spins?

Electrons must have different spin states so they can exist together in the same sublevel.

I'm pretty sure we just need to know how to draw the diagrams. so remember they must be in opposite directions
