Quantum Numbers and Energy Levels

Postby Diana A 2L » Sun Oct 20, 2019 11:45 pm

Why do energy levels become closer together as the quantum number, n, increases? Why is there such a large gap between the first and second energy levels?

The value of the energy level is proportional to 1/n^2 which gives a series 1, 1/4, 1/9, 1/16, and so on

The energy levels get close and closer together due to a higher effective nuclear charge. As energy levels go up, the pull on the electrons decreases causing a greater distance between nucleus and outermost orbital. There is such a large gap because there is a greater energy change.
