What's the difference between electron affinity and ionization energy?

Electron affinity is the energy released when electrons are added to a gas-phase atom while ionization energy is the energy ended to remove electrons from an atom (gas-phase). There is generally a high electron affinity for Group 17 atoms.

The difference between electron affinity and ionization energy is that electron affinity gives the amount of energy released when an atom gains an electron, and ionization energy is the amount of energy required to remove an electron from an atom.
