Determining Element

Postby Ashley Osorio » Sat Oct 26, 2019 2:53 pm

How do we determine an element from the quantum numbers? I mean, without knowing where the element is on the periodic table, we can't figure out ml, can't we? So, is it possible?

I don't think its possible to pin down individual elements if you are only given n, l, m. Rather, these describe orbitals in elements of that n

The combination of quantum numbers determines a specific electron within an element. I agree with the student above!

Quantum numbers are only used to describe the electrons in an element. Therefore, you will not be able to find the specific element given only the quantum numbers.

You can use the quantum numbers to count the number of valence electrons and determine the element (or ion, possibly)
