Formal names for each letter

Postby Clarice Chui 2C » Sun Nov 03, 2019 10:10 pm

Does anyone have an easy way to remember the full names for n, l, and ml?

n = principal number
l = orbital angular momentum number
ml = magnetic number

I would just try and hard-code it into my mind. I don't think the full names of the quantum numbers matter very much though--I'm sure the graders will know what you mean if you just use n, l, ml, and ms.

n = energy level
l = s, p, d, f classification
ml = axis each spins on

I remember them this way because its easier than the normal vocabulary.

To add on to previous responses, mx is the spin of the electron and can be either positive or negative 1/2

n = Principle Quantum Number
l = Angular Momentum Quantum Number
ml = Magnetic Quantum Number
ms = Spin Magnetic Quantum Number

n defines l and ml and as such is the principle quantum number. For l, I tend to think of it as the odd one out; it's not the principle and it's not magnetic so it must be angular momentum. As for ml and ms, as mentioned previously, they are magnetic for the m's in their names. ms has the s for spin.

N is principal quantum number (shell), l is angular momentum quantum number (subshell), ml is the magnetic quantum number (orbital), and ms is the spin.
