For 1E.5 part d, the problem asks to tell whether a statement is true or false.
d) Zeff e for an electron in a p-orbital is lower than for an electron in an s-orbital in the same shell

I approach this question by thinking that since both are on the same shell, their distance from the nucleus are the same so their Zeff is the same; so i put false. But the answer is true so I don’t understand why?

The more electron shielding an electron has, the lower the Zeff it experiences. Because the 1s orbital has more density near the nucleus than the 1p orbital, it is said to shield the 1p orbital from the full effective charge of the nucleus, Zeff.

Key misunderstanding here is that the s and p orbitals are not the same distance from the nucleus. The electrons in the s orbital have a higher likelihood of being closer to the nucleus because the p orbitals extend farther out.
