How does an increase in n increase energy levels?

Each energy level is referred to by a number, n=1 for the first level, n=2, and so on. It's not an increase in n that increases energy levels, but a certain amount of kinetic energy that excites electrons up to the next energy level.

I thought of it as an increase in "n" inherently implies that there was an increase in energy. This is because in order for an electron to become excited to a higher "n" level, it must absorb a certain amount of energy. Thus, we can come to the conclusion that an increase in "n" increases energy levels.
