Angular Momentum Quantum Numbers

Postby Emily Ding 1J » Tue Oct 27, 2020 10:04 pm

Hi, I was struggling with this question:

"Magnesium ions are a known cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions. What are the possible angular momentum quantum number(s) of the highest energy electrons in these magnesium ions? Indicate the corresponding subshell of each angular momentum quantum number."

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Magnesium has atomic number 12, and its electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2. The highest energy electrons are on the n=3 subshell, the 3s2 electrons. The s block has l=0, so they are both l=0.
