Electron Spin Number

Postby Albert 1I » Sun Oct 17, 2021 9:25 pm

Hello! I am sort of confused on what the electron spin number is/what significance it has in reference to the other quantum numbers.

The Pauli Exclusion Principle states that there can be no more than two electrons in each orbital, and that if there are two in the same orbital then their spins are paired (they have opposite spins). The spin magnetic quantum number (ms) is the fourth quantum number that describes the angular momentum of a particular electron. It can be equal to +1/2, which means spin up, or -1/2, spin down.

Adding on to what Aparna said, the spin number is independent of all the other quantum numbers, as m is always +1/2 or -1/2, so it shouldn't have an affect on the other quantum numbers
